Empowering Communities
Background / History
The Community First Co-operative Credit Union Ltd. (CFCCU), formerly the Antigua and Barbuda Teachers' Co-operative Credit Union Ltd. (ABTCCU), was established in April 1959 to provide teachers and their families with a reliable financial institution. Officially registered in January 1982, the organization rebranded in 2004 with a new name and logo that reflect its commitment to quality service, innovation, and community spirit. Guided by its mission "to promote thrift and create a source of credit for provident and productive purposes," CFCCU has consistently expanded its services to benefit its members and the wider public.
In 1989, membership was opened to the broader community, welcoming professionals, small business owners, and individuals from all backgrounds, including non-nationals. Since then, the Credit Union has experienced strong growth in membership, assets, savings, and loans. CFCCU is affiliated with the Antigua & Barbuda Co-operative League Ltd., the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU), and the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU). It operates under the supervision of the Financial Services Regulatory Commission (FSRC) in collaboration with the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB).
Today, CFCCU employs over 70 full-time staff across five departments: Management and Business Administration, Loans, Accounts, Human Resources, and Operations. Our Headquarters and Credit Centre are located on Old Parham Road, complemented by an off-site branch at Townhouse Plaza. The Credit Union is governed by a Board of Directors, Credit Committee, and Supervisory & Compliance Committee with volunteer members elected annually at the Annual General Meeting.
